From Traditional Web Development to Modern Cloud Solutions¶
In the early days of web development, building and hosting websites meant managing everything yourself. You'd set up servers, configure databases, handle security updates and just hope that nothing breaks. While this gave you complete control, it also meant spending more time on infrastructure than actually building your app's features.
Here's what made traditional development challenging:
Scaling was manual and risky. When your app got popular, you'd scramble to add more servers and hope your configuration could handle the load. One misconfiguration could bring everything down.
Maintenance consumed development time. Your team spent hours monitoring servers, applying security patches, and troubleshooting infrastructure issues instead of building new features.
Costs were unpredictable. You paid for servers whether they were busy or idle, and estimating capacity meant either over-provisioning (wasting money) or under-provisioning (risking downtime).
Enter AWS and Cloud Computing¶

What is AWS?
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is Amazon's cloud computing platform. Instead of buying and managing your own servers, AWS lets you rent computing resources on-demand. You pay only for what you use, and AWS handles the underlying infrastructure.
AWS solved the traditional development problems by introducing managed services. Instead of setting up your own database server, you use Amazon RDS or DynamoDB. Instead of configuring web servers, you use services like Amplify or Lambda. AWS handles the maintenance, scaling, and security while you focus on your application logic.
What is Cloud Computing?
Cloud computing means using someone else's computers (servers) over the internet instead of physically buying and owning them yourself. It's like renting an apartment instead of buying a house; you get all the benefits without the maintenance responsibilities.
The cloud model offers three key advantages:
- On-demand resources: Spin up new servers in minutes, not weeks
- Pay-as-you-go: Only pay for resources you actually use
- Managed services: Let AWS handle the complex infrastructure tasks
Serverless Architecture with AWS¶
What is Serverless?¶
Serverless computing is an execution model where cloud providers automatically manage infrastructure provisioning, scaling, and maintenance. Developers deploy code without configuring or managing servers, operating systems, or runtime environments.

Automatic Resource Management
AWS handles server provisioning, patching, and scaling based on application demand without manual intervention.
Event-Driven Execution
Applications respond to triggers such as HTTP requests, database changes, or file uploads, executing only when needed.
Pay-per-Use Billing
Costs are based on actual resource consumption rather than pre-allocated capacity, eliminating charges for idle resources.

Authentication: Amazon Cognito for user identity and access management
